I used to dread leaving the house. I'd stall, grab extra things, get irritable or anxious, and often make us late. I didn’t KNOW I hated leaving the house because I'd always been that way. Realising this pattern was a huge light bulb moment. It took me longer to realise that I had a wider issue (thanks, ADHD 🙄). I also struggled to cope with unexpected visitors, and I’d get super anxious or irritated if people were early (or late). It was exhausting. After some Lower Cauldron exploration, I discovered that the ‘wider issue’ was transitions - or moving from one state of being to another... When I recently mentioned this in The Cauldrons Way community, many students said they felt the same but hadn’t recognised it before. Here’s what we talked about... What is a Transition in this context?A transition is any shift from one activity, environment, or emotional state to another. Some are predictable, like moving from work mode to home life. Others catch us off guard - a friend changes dinner plans, an unexpected visitor shows up, or the day doesn’t unfold the way you expected. For some, these moments bring a nagging discomfort. For others, they trigger stress, irritability, or exhaustion. Signs You Struggle with Transitions
Hidden Signs You Might Not Recognize
Why Transitions Feel HardMost of us were never taught how to move smoothly from one thing to another. As kids, we relied on caregivers to guide us. If transitions were rushed, chaotic, or unsupported, we learned to associate them with stress.
As a kid, you likely had a tantrum (AKA a reaction to overwhelm). As adults, we can’t chuck ourselves on the floor and scream. Although we often want to! So, transition issues sneak in disguised as frustration, procrastination, or the inability to focus. The Lower CauldronWhen life changes suddenly, it can trigger discomfort or even fear. The loss of control unsettles the Lower Cauldron—the part that governs your survival, safety, and physical well-being. If transitions leave you feeling ungrounded, anxious, or on edge, it might be a sign your Lower Cauldron needs support. Ways to bring balance to your Lower Cauldron and ease transitions: ✅ Grounding exercises: walk barefoot and sit with your back against a tree. ✅ Nourishing foods: eat meals that feel stabilising and supportive. ✅ Rhythmic movement: drumming, rocking, or other steady actions. ✅ Visualising stability: imagine roots growing deep beneath you. ✅ Set boundaries: Let others know if you need a few minutes to reset. ✅ Use movement or sound: Stretch, hum, tap a rhythm - something to mark the shift. ✅ Accept imperfection: Transitions won’t always be smooth. Notice patterns and try different approaches. What Doesn’t Help When transitions feel overwhelming, we sometimes fall into unhelpful coping habits:
I shared a wee trick with the group of members... it's kinda simple: I acknowledge my frustration and, in my head, yell, “PIVOT!” (If you know, you know 😁) I don't pretend the shift is easy when it isn't. Adding a little lightness and humour to the moment permits me to reset instead of spiralling. What transitions do you struggle with?
